Portugal's tax identification number, needed for almost everything: opening a bank account, signing a lease, getting utilities, or applying for a visa.

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is issued by the Portuguese tax authority. Non-residents can obtain one, often through a fiscal representative, and it is usually one of the first things to arrange when moving to or investing in Portugal.
It is not a residence permit — it is purely a tax ID — but without it most administrative and financial steps are blocked.
